Parish History: Volume 1 and 2 |
A two-volume history of St. Mary Parish (St. Mary’s
of Natchez, The History of a Southern Catholic Congregation,
1716-1988) was published in 1992. The author is Dr. Charles Nolan,
archivist for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. This publication, 732
pages, is in two volumes. Dr. Nolan’s description of this
publication is “This is a study of Mississippi’s oldest continuous
religious congregation. It centers on the people of St. Mary. . .
And is shaped by the new understanding of church and parish that has
emerged since the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) as well as the
new emphasis on social history. Brief portraits of several hundred
men and women are woven into the pages of this history.” The cost
at the time of publication was $49.95. Fifty (50) sets are now
available at $25.00 per set (plus a shipping fee of $5.00). |

Cradle Days of St. Mary’s at Natchez |
Bishop Richard O. Gerow, Bishop of the Diocese of
Natchez from 1924-1967, published this history in 1941, the 100th
anniversary of the establishment of the Diocese. It was reprinted in
1985. This book traces the growth of the church in Mississippi. He
described the purpose of this history “to preserve for the future
the valuable historic data of the pioneer days of the Church in
Natchez, and to present this story to the public.” He said, “In the
story, we see the small group of faithful souls at Natchez, for many
years without a resident priest, longing for the spiritual
ministrations of the Church; we see the struggles of the pioneer
bishops, priests, and laity to give to themselves and future
generations its magnificent Cathedral.” Copies of this one-volume
publication are available for $20.00 each (plus a shipping fee of
$3.50). |
