Great crowds were traveling with Jesus,
and he turned and addressed them,
"If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother,
wife and children, brothers and sisters,
and even his own life… View video >>

Do Not Despair
Christ is present even in the darkness
John R. Quinn
This address was delivered at the National Federation of Priests’ Councils, Houston, Texas, April 13, 2010.
I am here to pay tribute to you, the priests of the United States. You stand on the front line. You meet the angry or confused or troubled people at the Sunday Masses in your parishes and missions. You have to try to answer their questions about the worldwide crisis caused by priests and bishops around the world. You are the ones out there in the parishes whose hearts break at the anguish of our people over the robbed innocence of their children. And you weep inside over the desecration of something so beautiful, so cherished as the priesthood is to all of us. You are the ones who meet the children and the families, and try your best to walk with them in their search for peace and healing. You are there where the wound is… Read more >>

Living within the truth: Religious liberty and Catholic mission in the new order of the world
Charles Chaput, Catholic Archbishop of Denver Colorado, addressed the first session of the 15th symposium for the Canon Law Association of Slovakia on Tuesday. He called upon Catholics in America and in Europe, to resist the world's intolerance of Christianity.
Tertullian once famously said that the blood of martyrs is the seed of the Church. History has proven that to be true. And Slovakia is the perfect place for us to revisit his words today. Here, and throughout central and eastern Europe, Catholics suffered through 50 years of Nazi and Soviet murder regimes. So they know the real cost of Christian witness from bitter experience… Read more >>

Promoting abortion in The Year of Youth
Vatican Daily Warns of Aim to Break Parent-Child Bond
ROME, AUG. 24, 2010 (Zenit.org).- It seems a contradiction, but the International Year of Youth that the United Nations began this month is becoming a forum to promote abortion.
The Vatican's semi-official daily, L'Osservatore Romano, made this observation, pointing the finger at international organizations including the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA)… Read more >>

Our Lady of Perpetual Help (or of Perpetual Succour) is a Byzantine icon from the late middle ages and has resided in Rome since the late 1400s. The Eastern Catholics call it "Holy Theotokos of the Passion."

The image depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary wearing a blue mantle and veil. On the left side is the Archangel Michael, carrying the lance and sponge of the crucifixion of Jesus. On the right is the Archangel Gabriel carrying the cross and nails. The Christchild rests in her arms and looks intently at the cross… Read more >>
The devotion to this Marian advocation revolves around the picture of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, painted on wood, with background of gold. It is Byzantine in style and is supposed to have been painted in the thirteenth century… Read more >>

Official Statement

Bishop Latino designates September 26 Catholic Charities’ Sunday
Catholic Charities USA will celebrate its 100th anniversary on Sept. 25, 2010. To recognize this significant anniversary and the many people who serve the Lord by ministering through Catholic Charities, I declare Sunday, Sept. 26, as Catholic Charities’ Sunday for the Diocese of Jackson.

I urge all parishes and missions to offer special intercessory prayers for the faithful staff of our local diocesan Catholic Charities as well as the national staff and for the people that Catholic Charities so generously assists with compassion and care. Catholic Charities strives to continually be the hands and face of Jesus Christ to so many in desperate need.

Next week I will offer more thoughts on the great works of Catholic Charities in our diocese. Visit their web site – catholiccharitiesjackson.org – for more information on the services Charities provides.

"The priest and pastoral ministry in a digital world:
new media at the service of the Word."
Benedictus PP. XVI

Dear brothers and sisters, pray for us, Pastors of the Church, that by assimilating the Word of God daily we may pass it on faithfully to our brethren.

Yet we too pray for you, all the faithful, because every Christian is called through Baptism and Confirmation to proclaim Christ, the light of the world, in word and in the witness of his life.

May the Virgin Mary, Star of Evangelization, help us to bring this mission to completion together, and may St Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, intercede for us from Heaven. Amen.

Benedictus PP. XVI
