GRANTS FOR ST. MARY BASILICA STUDENTS AT CATHEDRAL SCHOOL
(Effective date: October 20, 2010)

All Catholics have an obligation from the Scriptures and from Church teachings to financially contribute to the support of their Church. These contributions help meet the operational costs of the parish - parish programs, staff, utilities, and support for Catholic education. The contribution patterns, Mass attendance and participation in parish activities in St. Mary Basilica parish have been studied by the Pastoral Council, the finance council, the pastor and the staff. The findings of this study and six months consultations have resulted in updated guidelines.

The tuition cost for participating Catholic students (subsidized rate) is approximately $635 less per year than for students who are not Catholic. This rate was available to families who were registered members of St. Mary parish for at least one year, who attended Mass each weekend, who contributed financially on a regular, identifiable and meaningful way to the parish, and who participated in the life and activities of the parish. The new tuition policy, effective October 20, 2010, is as follows:

  1. Financial contributions from all St. Mary parishioners help meet the operational costs of the parish and tuition assistance at Cathedral School.
  2. Catholic families of Cathedral students who contribute 50% or more of the subsidy ($635) to St. Mary Basilica per year will qualify for the subsidized or reduced tuition.
  3. Catholic families who contribute less than 50% of the subsidy will receive a grant of $2 for every $1 donated to the parish.
  4. Grants will be based on the contribution amounts of the calendar year before the tuition billing date for the upcoming school year. (Grants for the school year 2011-2012 will be based on the contributions made to St. Mary Basilica during the calendar year 2010.)
  5. Eligibility for grants / subsidy will require:
A. Being a registered member of St. Mary parish for at least one year.
B. Regular weekend Mass attendance by parent(s) and children.
C. Financial contributions to the parish that are regular, meaningful and identifiable.
D. Participation in the life and programs of the parish by parent(s) and children:
- Parent(s) to be participants in one of the parish programs (a parish committee or
commission, Pastoral Council, Why Catholic?, etc.) and in one liturgical role.
- Children/adolescents to participate in Liturgy of Word for Children, KCYO, JCYO
or CYO and in liturgical roles (Mass server, lector, usher, greeter, gift bear, etc.).
The revised policy is intended to encourage active participation in the parish by all families and individuals.
Parents are the primary teachers of their children in the ways of faith. The revised policy is
intended to encourage their active participation in the parish so that they get the support they need for their role. The parish leadership groups and the pastor have undertaken the construction/renovation of the new Family Life Center as an additional means of assisting families and individuals of every age in their faith journey. Parents or families who experience difficulty in fulfilling the financial contribution requirement may request a meeting with members of the parish pastoral or finance councils.
